JANAY RICE you have got to be kidding us.

Today Janay Rice, wife of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice released a statement regarding the recent media escalation and public outrage over the domestic knock out punch she suffered at the hands of her now husband (then fiancee) Ray.  The image of this young woman being dragged out of an elevator was alarming to say the very least.

Perhaps the Rice’s are in need of professional counsel who could advise the couple of when they should speak publicly, as well as carefully placing the words in their mouths, because many of us were left absolutely floored by Janay’s Instagram statement that is now circulating the internet.

Janay wrote:

“I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I’m mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it’s reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that hte media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific.

“THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don’t you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you’ve succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!”

I am going to go out on a limb and note that the following sentiments are my own, but I’m certain that a healthy segment of the population must be wondering the same thing regarding Mrs. Rice and her union with Ray Rice:

JANAY RICE married Ray Rice in spite of the fact that she’d been at least once battered by him. She married him and bound herself unto him by having his child.   The question that I have now – since Ray Rice has been cut by the NFL and his career in the public eye has been terminated, is will you stay with him now???  Now, that his financial worth is certain to be diminishedThis question just begs to be asked right now. especially since Mrs. Rice has the audacity to admonish us all for being outraged by her husbands actions and concerned for her well-being.

Mrs. Rice’s statement even further prompts concern regarding a perhaps minimized self-esteem within this young woman.  Certainly she’s got to be mortified over the images of her unconscious body being dragged out of the elevator.  Certainly she’s got to be mortified that everyone and their puppy-dogs are talking about it.  Certainly this is something that she’d rather not have anyone at all be privy to.

All of the above being said, Mrs. Rice appears to be blinded to the public concern for her welfare. The outrage is regarding her welfare.  The fact that Mrs. Rice cannot see beyond her own mortification, but instead issues a public tongue-lashing for our concern is quite disturbing.  Our concern that Ray Rice’s physical affront to his future wife was not the first infraction and that it’s not likely to be the last. Our concern that the NFL should not have taken the infraction so lightly.

My initial response to Mrs. Rice’s statement was indignation.  How dare she?  She needs to just shut the heck up.  In simmering down, and taking the time to digest Janay Rice’s diatribe, it becomes evident that attacking this young woman is out of line.   Janay Rice may indeed be in need of assistance.  One must wonder if child protective services may even need to investigate the household.  Something is horribly amiss here with the psyche of Janay Rice.  Her self-esteem seems to be in dire need of reparation.

It’s my hope that Janay Rice and her child survive this ordeal with their mental and spiritual faculties in tact, and I hope that the mental health community is paying attention and watching for the signs of an at-risk woman with an infant.

May Janay Rice be granted, health, wisdom and strength.
