You can’t approach this giant bird without bowing first

The shoebill is a giant, stork-like bird (also sometimes called a whalehead), which gets its name from its shoe-shaped bill.

Here’s a shoebill that won’t let people near unless they bow first, just like Buckbeak from Harry Potter:

These birds are found in tropical east Africa in large swamps and dense marshes, where there are many reed beds. They get to be about 5 feet tall, weighing around 13 pounds, but they can still perch above floating vegetation (to hunt for fish that jump up out of poorly oxygenated waters)

The birds are normally silent but will clatter their bills like this one in the video. Sometimes they make produce a cow-like moo or a higher whining sound.
