On Saturday, May 21, members of Tarpon Springs Police Department (TSPD) escorted the daughter of fallen police officer Charles Kondek Jr. to her senior prom.
Aleena Kondek was completely unaware of the department’s intentions. When she got off the bus to go to her prom, she was met with over a dozen men and women in uniform.
TSPD said they felt it was their duty to send Kondek off to her senior prom, Fox 13 reported.
“It’s our responsibility and our honor to stand in for Charlie. Charlie would be here and he’s not able to be here. So we want to be here for Charlie and for Aleena,” said Maj. Young.
Kondek, who is set to graduate in a few weeks from River Ridge High School in New Port Richey, Florida, said she was thankful her dad’s colleagues were there for her on her prom night.
“They always say ‘never forgotten’ and I totally believe that. They’re always texting me how are you doing and they step in with things that my dad did and they’re amazing. I love each and every one of them,” she said.
Kondek’s father, Officer Charlie Kondek, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Dec. 21, 2014.
“It was an honor and privilege to be able to do this for Charlie as we know he would have been there himself,” TSPD wrote on their Facebook page.
Although, Kondek misses her dad, she said she knows that he is always with her.
“I just kept smiling all day because I know he’s watching down and I know he’s probably tearing up watching me put makeup on and get my hair done. They’re my dad’s brothers and they’ve been stepping in and they’re amazing,” she said.
