Stranger saw mom and son at hospital. Then when boy was alone, slipped him a note

Melissa Simms, mother of five, was just having one of those days where everything was going wrong and all she felt she could do was apologize.

Over the last two years, she had to go through a series of surgeries, and they were straining the family financially. Finally, one Thursday, they were down to just $10.

She and her husband used that last bill for gas, so he could go to work, and she could go to the doctor’s for her appointment.

“All day I was stressed about ‘How am I going to make supper for my kids?'” said Simms.

Her son Trey, in 7th grade, was home sick, adding to the stress. With these worries building up in her mind, Simms and her son departed for the doctor’s office so she could still make her appointment.

As Simms went in to see her doctor, her son Trey stayed outside in the waiting room.

It was then that a woman who had been watching the stressed mother and son approached the boy. She handed him a note, and said it was for his mother.

Trey hadn’t thought much of it at the time, and obediently held onto the envelope.

Simms finished up her appointment and while the two of them were walking to the car, Trey handed her the envelope.

She started to open it and read it—then stopped, stunned. Then she started crying.

Inside was a handwritten note that read: “I’ve had days like you’re having today. Hang in there.”

It also included a line from scripture, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go”—and a hundred dollar bill.

“It is a complete feeling of peace, just like everything is going to be OK,” said Simms.

In the grand scheme of things, $100 might not seem like a lot. But for Simms, because of this kind anonymous gesture of goodwill, she was able to make her co-payment, and buy supper for her family.

“If I would have known what it was, I would have told her thank you,” Trey told WBRC.

Simms, grateful, tried to find the anonymous angel on Facebook. She had read about acts like this, and understood how they could just turn someone’s day completely around. But the timing of this was impeccable.

“Sorry I had to share this… I was having one of those days where it just seemed everything was going wrong and then….a unknown woman which I will call her an (EARTHLY ANGEL) handed this to my son while we were at the doctors office to give me. This made my whole entire day THANK YOU and I will pay it forward! I have read about these random acts of kindness, but this is the first time I have ever experienced it first hand!!! Just thought maybe this could cheer up someone’s day as much as it has mine!!!” she wrote.

“I don’t know what she looks like. I don’t know her name, but I hope I get to meet her to say thank you,” Simms said.

For her, it wasn’t just a note or some money.

“It’s the kindest thing that’s ever been done,” she said. “Truly from the bottom of my heart I thank this woman. I would love to repay it and to pay it forward one day just like she did.”
