One of the reasons we love dogs so much is because they are loyal and loving to a fault. But, that same love and loyalty are also part of the reason why dogs are so often abused. In those cases, the abuse is made even more tragic due to the dog’s innocence and trust.

When a 6-year-old girl in the United Kingdom found a boxer barely alive in a concrete grave, she was horrified. She could not ignore its suffering, and so she decided to rescue her.

Six-year-old Cara was out playing when she happened upon a grizzly sight.

Last night Rainbow received a call from a very concerned member of the public. His daughter had been out playing and…

In 2014, 6-year-old Cara was out playing around her home in Northern Ireland, when she found something unusual and terrifying.

It was a concrete hole, covered in branches and old planks of wood. On the wood were rocks to weigh the wood down. Inside, was an emaciated, blind dog—a female boxer, starving to death.

This dog was dying, right in front of Cara’s young eyes .

Cara instantly knew she wanted to save this dog.

Such a sight might have scared other children, but Cara was no ordinary 6-year-old. She did not run away, instead, she ran home to get her father, Kenny, to help her rescue this dog.

When she told her father, they immediately went to rescue the starving dog.

“We are a family of animal lovers,” Kenny said, according to Little Things.

The two quickly arrived on the scene, Kenny lifted the boxer out of the hole, and together they brought the distressed dog home.

Bella, as she was named, had endured a hard life.

The dog, whom they called Bella, was in bad shape. She was completely blind and starving, devouring a tin of food in seconds. If that wasn’t enough, she had other health issues. Specifically, a uterus infection, which gave a clear picture into Bella’s previous life.

Vets surmised that she had been used as a puppy mill, but was discarded like garbage when she proved unable to conceive again. It is a common, yet tragic story.

And yet, despite having suffered such terrible abuses, Bella was surprisingly grateful and affectionate.

Bella finally found peace.

The family looked after Bella as best they could, but it was clear from the get-go that she was going to need serious medical attention. So, they contacted the Rainbow Rehoming Center, an organization that rehabilitates and re-homes abandoned pets.

The center took Bella into their custody and nursed her back to health. When they posted her story online, it quickly went viral and reached nearly 450,000 people. Thanks to that publicity, she was soon placed with a family who took the blind and elderly, yet still affectionate, dog into their home.

A year later, Bella passed away, but thanks to Cara’s loving heart, the last year of her nightmarish life was full of love and affection. And after a life full of abuse, hopefully that was enough to give the dog some peace.
