"Customers love him"

Working in customer service, there’s an expectation to “serve with a smile.” If you’re not friendly with customers, it can make the company look bad and drive away business. Yet humans tend to struggle with this, especially when they’re having bad days.

Sometimes it’s hard to separate life outside of work from the job itself and we go in with a bad attitude. Other times the work situation itself isn’t great and that attitude gets expressed outwardly.

Perhaps, then, the duty of greeting customers with a smile shouldn’t fall on humans. Maybe more businesses should take a page from a Shell gas station in Brazil.

Negão the dog was found 2 years ago outside a gas station in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil.

Back in 2015, Sabrina Plannerer and her partner had just purchased a Shell gas station in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil. During the construction process, a black dog named Negão would often visit the site.

He was very friendly to Plannerer and her business partners, despite having had some negative interactions with humans in the past.

Negão’s previous owners had abandoned him, and now he didn’t have anywhere else to go. Plannerer decided to take Negão in as her own.

“We adopted him immediately and got him all the care animals need,” Plannerer told The Dodo. “We took him to the vet to get vaccinated and de-wormed. We bought him food, a dog house, and a leash to take him on walks.”

Plannerer knew that Negão was a special dog, so she gave him an opportunity unlike any other.

Negão got a full-time job at the gas station.

This pup received more than just a place to stay—he got a job. Once the gas station opened up, Negão was working full-time as a greeter, complete with his own hat…
