Watch: Orangutan Picks up a Cigarette and Smokes It
A recent video captured at a controversial zoo in Indonesia appears to show an orangutan in Indonesia picking up a cigarette and smoking it.
The cigarette had been thrown into the enclosure by a visitor.
The great ape then picks up the cigarette and begins to smoke it.
Marison Guciano, who filmed the footage, wrote that there was a “lack of supervision by zoo management,” adding that it’s “one of the issues which must be addressed. Indonesia desperately needs animal welfare standards in its zoos.”
Guciano, the founder of the Indonesia Animal Welfare Society, also described the people who threw the cigarette in the pen as “ignorant visitors.”
The video footage was taken March 4.
According to Channel News Asia, the orangutan is a 22-year-old specimen named Ozon, who lives at the zoo in Bandung, located about 90 miles southeast of Jakarta.
In 2012, an orangutan at another zoo reportedly got addicted to cigarettes after picking up butts.
A zoo spokesperson told Channel News Asia that the security guard at the Badung zoo may have been using the bathroom when a visitor threw the cigarette in the enclosure.
“There’s actually a sign at the location which says visitors are not allowed to give food and cigarettes to the animals,” said spokesman Sulhan, who goes by just one name.
It’s not the first time that the Bandung zoo has been in hot water. Activists in 2017 demanded the facility be shut down after skeletal-looking sun bears were seen apparently begging for food and eating their own excrement. A zoo official denied those claims, the BBC reported.
