There’s a saying that “birds of a feather flock together,” that one tends to join a group of their own kind. However, 5-month-old puppy Sri Ram and 3-month-old calf Bernie are an exception to this rule, forming a long-lasting, heart-warming friendship between dog and bull in one animal sanctuary in Colombia.
Sri Ram and Bernie… they only know about love. <3
Juliana Castañeda, the founder and director of Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary, was the one who found the protagonists of this extraordinary story. She was surveying the vicinity of the sanctuary for abandoned dogs when she came across a litter of four puppies in the backyard of a home nearby.
Castañeda didn’t think much about it at the time and went home. However, she woke up at 5 a.m. when she realized something was off about the puppies. She recalled that they seemed to be left alone by their owners and didn’t seem like healthy puppies.
She returned to that house to check, and sure enough, the puppies were in near-death condition. The owners didn’t care at all about them—one of them had even died due to neglect—and were even planning on selling them for money.
Castañeda was horrified by what she learned from the owners and decided to take the matter into her own hands. She told the owners that she would bring the puppies to get medical attention but didn’t bother returning them afterwards.
On a trip to the United States, Castañeda found loving homes for three of the four puppies and took the last one, Sri Ram, with her back home.
A month after Sri Ram was rescued, another baby joined the sanctuary. Bernie was born on a local dairy farm. Being a bull rather than a cow, Bernie couldn’t contribute to milk production and was very undesirable to the owners.
The original plan was to sell him, but Bernie would have most likely ended up being slaughtered for veal that way. Although the farm didn’t need him, the owners didn’t have the heart to see him killed. Instead, Castañeda was contacted to take Bernie in.
Bernie Calf Still Needs You!As you may know, Bernie was supposed to arrive at our sanctuary yesterday, but we had to…
Although the sanctuary was already lacking space for large animals, Castañeda took Bernie in anyway. She placed him along with the dogs so the calf wouldn’t be trampled by other big friends. The dogs treated Bernie kindly, though they were less active as playmates.
The sanctuary’s co-founder suggested introducing the energetic Sri Ram to Bernie, and that turned out to be a decision that changed both of their lives. Castañeda shared with Inside Edition, “They loved each other from the first day.” And they have been inseparable since.
Bernie is ready to go to bed, he already has his pajamas and is bedding down in our house for now. Night night! <3 He lost his mom but he found love and people who care for him at the sanctuary.
Maybe because Bernie stayed with the dogs he began to think that he was a dog, too. Perhaps Sri Ram concurred with that idea, as he didn’t treat Bernie any differently. There doesn’t seem to be any barrier between the two friends at all. They do everything together from playing to taking naps and showing affection by showering each other with kisses.
The best friends have been growing up together and may even grow old together, as well, becoming lifelong friends. Although they will certainly diverge in size, their love for each other certainly shall not.
8:00 AM in Colombia and Bernie and Simon still sleeping… This is what happens when you play the whole day, you are too tired for your morning activities… oh kids!
Castañeda said her dream ever since she was a child has been to open an animal sanctuary so she can help more animals in need, like Sri Ram and Bernie. It’s worthy to note that Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary is reported to be the only no-kill animal sanctuary in Colombia.
Every life deserves a chance to live, and no matter how different, everyone can become friends. Spreading love for one another, and compassion toward all life, will give us a more harmonized society and a better world to live in.
