Innovative ‘Bike Washing Machine’ Combines Stationary Bike Exercise & Washing Clothes

Everyone needs clean clothes. We all need exercise, but not everyone has a washing machine. Problem solved.

Some of us live in apartment buildings with shared facilities, while others make trips to the laundromat. Getting clean clothes need not be such a hassle. A new invention that combines a stationary exercise bike with a rotating drum could change all of this for good. Design students from the Dalian Nationalities University in China came up with the ingenious concept and called it the B.W.M., or Bike Washing Machine.

Even if you have a top-of-the-line washing machine at home, this incredibly sleek design might interest you based on looks alone. Not to mention how efficiently it works; think of all of those calories wasted on working out that could go toward dampening your power bill by washing your clothes. Just the idea of it all sounds like a blast!

All that fun of getting your clothes cleaned while peddling is added incentive to keep in shape, too.

This is how it works: the pedals rotate the drum/wheel in the front, which holds a load of clothing. Human power is transferred into mechanical power, which then turns into cleaning power.

“When you ride this bike, the pedaling motion causes the drum of the washing machine to rotate,” one of the student designers told Tuvie.

The excess energy generated operates a display screen showing the wash process. There is the added incentive that your clothes simply won’t get clean unless your exercises get done.

None of the bikes have been produced as of yet.

This is not the first design to combine laundry with velocipedes. Inventor Barbora Tobolova took the concept a step further, combining a fully mobile bike and a washing machine drum to create the BiWa. Not as sleek a design as the B.W.M., the BiWa is equally practical. It introduces transportation into the equation. Not only will you get your exercise, but you’ll be able to possibly do your grocery shopping. Perhaps it will save you from doing an extra load at the laundromat down the street.
