Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT), also known as lymphocytic thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disease becoming more common. It now affects at least 14 million people in the United States and up to 7.5 percent globally. This condition, which involves the immune system attacking the thyroid gland, can lead to hypothyroidism and a range of severe symptoms. Additionally, if not properly managed, it increases the risk of heart problems and can raise the overall risk of death.
Unlike many thyroid disorders, HT often progresses quietly and might not be noticed until significant damage has occurred. This risk of damage emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment.
