Macular degeneration refers to a group of progressive eye diseases that damage the macula, the central part of the retina at the back of the eye, leading to a loss of central vision.
Approximately 20 million people in the United States have some form of age-related macular degeneration. Among the many types, age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in developed countries, accounting for 8.7 percent of all types of blindness worldwide.
