With the average player in the NBA standing at about 6 feet 7 inches tall, many people tend to think that height matters in basketball. However, a short player can have the ability to defeat tall athletes too if they possess remarkable mental toughness.

At 4 feet tall, Reese Turner, from Nacogdoches County in Cushing, Texas, dismisses the notion that short players cannot excel in basketball by showing us his amazing ball-handling and shooting skills in a highlight reel posted on Instagram.

“People still say I couldn’t but I just try to go out there and prove them wrong,” Turner, a 17-year-old Cushing High School junior with dwarfism, told EastTexasMatters.com. “You know just kind of do my thing and not worry about what people say.”

With the belief that as long as you play with your heart, you can always overcome playing with height, Turner uploaded his highlight reel from his junior season with the hashtags “Heart over Height” and “Different Breed.”

In the clip, the feisty Turner brilliantly leads the Bearkats boys’ basketball team to score on the court by draining three-pointers and free throws. As the ball gets through the hoop, he celebrates by doing some sassy dance moves.

As one would expect, the clip has been captivating many social media users, racking up more than 166,832 views. Turner has since become a small internet celebrity with over 14,400 followers on Instagram.

Short players might be at a disadvantage in the beginning. However, like in any other sports, if you want to be the best player, you have to train hard for it.

“He stays after almost every practice, shoots, makes sure he gets everything down,” Turner’s coach, Jeremy Tamez, said.

And hard work, dedication, and persistence always pay off! Now, Turner easily excels on the basketball court, despite being 4 feet tall.

Turner, the atypical basketball player, told KTRE: “I come in with a chip on my shoulder, but once I hit the first three they are like, ‘Whoa we better step up on this guy because he can actually shoot.’”

“I think it’s pretty amazing to see somebody put that much dedication into something [sic] getting seen by everybody out there,” coach Tamez said.

Alluding to the little man, his teammate C.J. Mays said, “He’s like a brother to me so it was very heart-warming and we support him on and off the court.”

“Most people like that don’t want to play basketball they just, [sic] people treat them different,” he further added.

If you’re one of those who thinks that you can’t chase your dream due to a certain physical limitation, Turner’s message is sure to motivate you.

“Look at me,” Turner said. “I mean I’m not tall enough, fast enough, strong enough but yet I still go out there and I still give it 100 percent at whatever I do. Live up to your dreams and don’t let anybody else destroy your dreams.”

Speaking to KTRE, he added: “My dream is coming true in a way. I am more than a little person.”
