Firefighters battled a massive blaze at an old mill in the UK, with aerial footage showing flames gutting the unstable building.

Several fire crews responded after a fire broke out at the derelict Proofings Mill in Littleborough, near Rochdale, on the morning of Saturday, March 24, according to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Local residents were temporarily evacuated. The service said that because of the instability of the building, crews could only fight the fire from the outside, slowing down efforts to extinguish it.

At the peak of the blaze, six fire trucks and two hydraulic platforms deployed, according to the fire service.

Officer in charge, Station Manager Andy Hardman said during an update on the fire, “We are targeting the fire from height from two sectors and also using handheld jets.”

Work was still underway at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday to demolish one section of the mill so crews could safety extinguish the remaining pockets of fire still burning under debris.

Station Manager Mick Lawlor said, “Crews have done a fantastic job this weekend at this challenging incident. We are now working with the demolition team to gain access to the site and extinguish and remaining pockets of fire.”
