Couple Who Met 25 Years Ago As Children with Cancer Marry in Place They First Met

This young couple first met as children roughly 25 years ago in a hospital that saved both of their lives. Now they are married, and the place they held the ceremony isn’t hard to guess.

When Lindsey Wilkerson was only 10, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and Joel Alsup was just 7 when he was found to have a cancerous bone tumor. Both were patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.

“And at the age of 10, I went from being a kid who had her whole life ahead of her to thinking that this cancer was a death sentence for me.

“But fortunately, our family found hope and support through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” Lindsey told WREG.

Joel needed his arm amputated.

“They discovered a tumor in my right arm. It had grown large enough that it broke a bone in my arm near my shoulder,” he said.

“When I met this guy, when I was in treatment, I admired him,” Lindsey said. “I looked up to him, I thought he was such an incredible person. We grew in our friendship over the years.”

It was when they both began working at St. Jude that their friendship blossomed into love.

“I was finally brave enough to tell her that I liked her, not only that I loved her. Luckily, she felt the same way,” said Joel.

They tied the knot on Sept. 1, 2018, an important date for both in more ways than one, as it is also the first day of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“Lindsey’s primary physician at St. Jude did a reading. Our officiant was our chaplain at St. Jude. It was beautiful and amazing to see the people and think of the events that got us to that day,” Joel told People.

“I never imagined that my childhood crush and then best friend would ever become my husband. We’ve had the blessing of growing up together, finding a deep and loving friendship that led to finding our forever love in each other. I’m so thankful for every moment with him,” Lindsey said.

“I could have never fathomed that I would be sitting here today at his side as his wife, having the privilege to married on the grounds of the place that saved our lives,” added Lindsey, reports WREG.

This loving couple are sure to inspire others who have obstacles in life to overcome.
