Using a long wooden stick, Jenny, wearing a white dress, is seen guiding blind Pepe around on a coconut farm in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

Walking barefooted, the little girl holds on to one end of the stick, while her father holds it on the other end. With his daughter’s guidance, Pepe then stops for a meal that consists of crackers and water.

In spite of his blindness, each day, Pepe was able to climb around 60 coconut trees to earn Php300 (approx. US$5.54) for his family’s bread and butter, reported ABS-CBN News.

With assistance from ABS-CBN Foundation and Rated K, Pepe was brought to Manila, where his eye-condition was diagnosed as retinal detachment and retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic eye disease in which the retina of the eye is damaged.

In addition, the foundation intended to help relocate Pepe, his wife, and their three children to a safer environment, and to provide him with livelihood training.

Other than that, Pepe was given Php10,000 (US$189.95) capital to set up a sari-sari store (a neighborhood sundry store).

Thanks to all who have helped to lift the family out of abject poverty. Now, Jenny and Pepe need not walk barefooted around the coconut farm anymore.

We’re so glad this family’s life has been changed for the better!
