Dear James: We moved into a new house with open space in the backyard, so I want to build a compost bin. What are some inexpensive options that are effective?—Sylvia W.
Dear Sylvia: It won’t take long to convert organic materials such as food waste, lawn clippings, and shrub and tree trimmings into fertile soil. These waste materials make up more than 30 percent of the garbage we throw away every year. Overall, composting these wastes is much less expensive than sending them to a landfill.
