When this man missed his own graduation thanks to a subway delay, the other passengers decided to do their good deed for the day and throw him an impromptu graduation party!
A certain ‘Full House’ episode comes to mind!
Jerich Marco Alcantara was riding to Radio City Music Hall to receive his degree from the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing when the train got delayed. Even the passengers who didn’t know him could figure out he was on his way to get that special piece of paper, since he was dressed in his graduation ceremony clothing, complete with cap and gown.
Fortunately, his family, friends, and even the other surprisingly sympathetic passengers decided to make the day special for him, anyway!
According to Teen Vouge, “Poor kid missed his graduation because of the train delay this morning … so we threw him a graduation on the train,” wrote one woman, identified as Nadiya Afzal, on Facebook.
According to reports, one passenger presented him a “degree” on his cellphone, and another passenger played Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” a typical graduation song on their phone as well.
“I was on track to be at my commencement at 9:15 a.m., but the delays altogether ended up taking almost three hours,” Jerich explained to Select All. “It wasn’t so much an idea, but something that just happened. Everyone was getting antsy and impatient, so I figured I’d lighten the mood by thanking everyone for coming out. That led to applause, and the rest just followed.”
Unfortunately, unlike a sitcom where the characters make it to the ceremony in the nick of time, and Jerich would get to have his cake and eat it, too. The ceremony was over by the time he had arrived. “But after the auditorium cleared out, my close friends threw me my own little graduation,” he added. “It was a great time.”
