Chip and Joanna Gaines’s latest fix-up project is a little different than usual. This time, it involves a playhouse.
The TV stars visited St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, on June 19, 2019, with a check in hand. The sum of money they handed over will make a substantial difference to the ongoing work of the incredible children’s charity; the Gaineses handed over a whopping $1.5 million.

But that wasn’t all. Chip and Joanna also designed and built a brand-new, permanent playhouse on site. In the spirit of fun, the married couple donned colorful bumblebee headbands to greet the young patients, and even got involved in musical festivities and a reading of Joanna’s own book for children, We Are the Gardeners.
Donations, which the couple raised through a lively social media campaign, #ChipInChallenge, came in from far and wide. Some of the Gaines’s celebrity friends sent generous sums, including Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, and Kacey Musgraves. But while the money was important, Chip and Joanna were determined to contribute something personal for the families at St. Jude’s Target House.
“When we heard that the space outside of Target House could use a little love, we knew right away that we wanted to create a sweet playhouse for the kids to enjoy,” Joanna said, according to People. “We wanted to create a retreat for them to explore while they are here.”
“We knew we wanted it to feel whimsical and fun,” Joanna explained. “That was the inspiration behind details like the colorful flowers in the flower boxes and the sweet kitchen area.” The playhouse, which sits behind a trellis of flowers, features a fun “pretend kitchen” where the young in-patients of the hospital can indulge their imaginations.

Richard Shadyac Jr. is the president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, and his gratitude was palpable. “To see their faces light up as they challenge their friends to a game of lawn bowling or explore the new playhouse designed by the incredible Chip and Joanna Gaines, it’s truly unforgettable.”
“We’re all so grateful.”
Chip and Joanna Gaines gave the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital more than their time and attention. Chip surrendered his hair at the St. Jude Target House and raised $230,000 for the hospital. The big question now: will Chip adopt the new look or bring back the ‘man bun’?

The Gaineses first visited St. Jude in 2017, and the visit left quite an impression. “We walked away completely changed,” Joanna shared on Facebook. “These kids were so full of joy and hope, I’ll never forget it.”
In 2017, to add to the Gaineses’ portfolio of awesomeness, Chip also vowed to shave his head on-site at St. Jude if fans were able to help him raise $25,000 in under seven days. Did they make it? Did they ever! After blowing their initial target out of the water (they ended up raising $230,000), Chip had absolutely no excuse not to hold up his end of the deal.

Fast-forward two years, and the task became personal for Chip and Joanna. Their dear friend Gabriele “Gabe” Grunewald was moved into palliative care following treatment for a rare salivary gland cancer, reported People. In response, and through his grief, Chip raised his St. Jude fundraising goal from $230,000 to $500,000 and also vowed to match every donation out of his own pocket.
When Grunewald sadly passed away, the Gaineses’ fighting spirit became fiercer than ever. “Cancer is ugly and it is mean and it doesn’t fight fair,” Chip shared on social media. “This has gotten extremely personal.”
It turned out that even a staggering $500,000 fundraising goal underestimated the generosity of the Gaineses’ followers. After tripling their estimation, the couple triumphantly presented $1.5 million to St. Jude knowing that it would certainly make a difference. Joanna was effusive in her thanks to all donors in a heartfelt message on Facebook.

St. Jude’s governing principle is that the families of children with cancer are never charged for treatment, travel, housing, or food during the most difficult time of their lives. The Gaineses are helping the hospital to achieve that goal. And their beautiful playhouse is helping to reintroduce fun and whimsy to the lives of children who really, truly deserve it.
“We are cheering you on every step of the way,” the amazing couple said.
