There’s a reason so many kids carry stuffed animals. They are the perfect companion to hug for comfort whenever they are stressed, lonely, or afraid.

Kids aren’t the only ones that use toys for comfort, though. Dogs will often keep a favorite toy as well.

Ellie the dog has been through some rough times, but she’s always had her teddy bear to support her.

Ellie was surrendered at a shelter with nothing but a teddy bear.

One-year-old Ellie spent months of her life living alongside a family near Dallas, Texas. Yet, for whatever reason, they later abandoned her at a shelter.

“They had gone to the trouble of getting all her shots, her spay surgery and microchip … [then] they just dumped her at the closest shelter,” Jennifer Jessup, a New York City-based dog rescuer, told The Dodo.

The one thing that her prior owners left for her was a teddy bear, which she snuggled with every night. It was a form of solace in a scary place where they euthanize animals to save space.

Upon learning about this, Jessup knew just who should be Ellie’s new owner. She first contacted a friend in Texas to pick Ellie up and take her to a boarding facility. There she was given a bath and got her paperwork in order to send her to a foster family.

The following night, she was moved into a foster home. Being around people who cared for her helped her to calm down, but she still clung on to her favorite teddy bear.

“The foster carer took a photo of her without her teddy bear, and she was curled up in a little ball, just scared to death,” Jessup said. “But when he put her back with her teddy bear, she just grabs it.”

On Wednesday, June 23, Ellie moved to her new permanent home. A company called TWD Transport drove Ellie from Texas all the way to Florida where Jessup’s brother lives.

“She is exhausted and my brother is going to spend the day with her trying to perk her up,” Jessup said on the day of the move. “She’s very timid and the trip was a difficult one, so it will take a while for her to come out of her shell.”

While it may take a while for Ellie to warm up to him, Jessup’s brother fell in love with her right away. Who knows? Maybe eventually, Ellie will love him even more than her teddy bear!
