This photo simply depicts a naive woman  wiping the windows of a house; however, police in the United Kingdom shared the image in order to notify the public of a “possible” sinister crime.

But can you guess what’s wrong with this picture?

Do you see someone who is always inside the home cleaning? They are also never out of the home on their own? This…

The photo was posted with a grave message by Avon and Somerset Constabulary on Facebook.

“Do you see someone who is always inside the home cleaning? They are also never out of the home on their own?” Avon and Somerset Constabulary wrote.

Members of the public have been warned to be alert if they notice someone always doing household chores but are never seen leaving the house, as there is a lot more to it than what meets the eye.

“This could be an indicator of domestic servitude,” Avon and Somerset police added in the post.

“Many victims won’t know they’re being exploited and need you to be a voice for them.”

Domestic servitude is a form of modern slavery that involves the exploitation of a victim—usually from another country—to perform forced labor, such as housekeeping or caring of children, in a private residence over long hours with little or no pay while having their movement restricted.

The Wiltshire Police also shared a similar warning on Twitter, “Do you see an individual responsible for the care of children 24 hours a day who is never ‘allowed’ out of the house on their own? Domestic servitude is almost invisible, but we know it’s happening.”

According to figures published by the Crown Prosecution Service on Aug. 9, 2018, the number of modern slavery prosecutions—which include sexual exploitation, forced labor, domestic servitude, child exploitation, and criminal exploitation—increased by over a quarter in the last year.

In June 2018, Harjit Bariana, a chip shop boss in Blyth, had been jailed for eight and a half years for enslaving vulnerable alcoholic tenants while he made them work for free at his takeaway restaurant by supplying them with drink, drugs, and leftovers.

Avon and Somerset police on their website state, “We rely heavily on the public to be our eyes and ears, to be in the places we can’t always be in. Intelligence plays a huge role in our fight to tackle crime; information received from the public could be the missing piece of a puzzle or break-through in a case.”

“Modern day slavery is happening across the UK and we need your help to protect some of society’s most vulnerable people, who all too often don’t have a voice,” they further added.

Have you also seen someone carrying out domestic duties or caring for children 24 hours a day in a home and who are not allowed to have any contact with the outside world?

If you live in the United Kingdom and you’ve come across the aforementioned signs of domestic servitude, please report to the police on 101, online at https://bit.ly/2CtxdPh, or anonymously through the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.
