A 26-year-old Poinciana High School teacher who was named “teacher of the year” and who was also the girls’ basketball coach was arrested Thursday, Jan. 25, after it was revealed that he had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said that a girl reported the teacher, Wayne McKenzie Ricks, to school administrators. He bought her sneakers, a cellphone, and a necklace, said Osceola County Maj. Jacob Ruiz, according to WFTV. The teacher also allegedly sent her a lewd image through Snapchat, and those allegations were apparently confirmed in a recorded phone call, said Ruiz.

Staff members at Poinciana High School once voted Ricks teacher of the year in November 2017, but since the allegations surfaced, he has since resigned.
