Many people know what it’s like to lose a loved one or how frightening it is when someone you care about gets sick. These are unfortunate and sad realities that unexpectedly come up and force us to reflect on what we truly value in our lives. As the saying goes, you don’t know how much you actually love someone until they are no longer there.
And when that someone is an immediate family member or a very close loved one, who is very sick or even dying, then it’s a very painful experience.
But when one man was given just months to live, his story had a very surprising and inspiring twist.
Donia Moore had to face the most difficult time in her life when she was just 16 years old, getting ready for life as a young woman. Her father was diagnosed with incurable cancer and given less than six months to live.
“I adored my father and could not imagine a world without this kind and thoughtful man, with his twinkling blue eyes, always ready to help with advice or a hug,” she said, according to ChickenSoup.com.
Her mother was faced with the terrible task of having to break the news to her father in his hospital bed. But she made an interesting decision—she asked everyone not to tell him that he was going to die.
The family decided to support their father and husband in fighting his diagnosis and living his best life, no matter how much time he had left—with only joy and celebration, instead of pain and sorrow.
They say the power of the mind can cure any disease, especially when one never gives up. This whisper of hope gave the man a chance to live his life to the fullest.
Since her parents had always dreamed of traveling, they began to take trips across the United States, to Hawaii, and Europe. Although Moore’s father was now permanently in a wheelchair, her mother tirelessly pushed him everywhere they had always wanted to go, filling up their passports with countless stamps from around the world—all the while laughing and enjoying life.
Suddenly, that six months had turned into a few years, and they kept going, never once telling their father what ill fate the doctors had left him.
And when his only daughter Donia announced her engagement, she was thrilled to hope that her father would be able to attend her wedding. She decided to hold the wedding and reception at her family home, so that in case her father got tired he could rest.
When she was in her wedding gown getting ready to walk down the lawn grass aisle, with all eyes upon here, and doing the best she could do to hold in her emotion, she was startled to hear loud gasps from the 300-plus relatives and friends attending the wedding.
When she turned towards her father, tears came to her eyes. She found herself looking at her father in the eye, as he was now standing by her side, with his outstretched arm getting ready to walk his own daughter down the aisle.
He was never supposed to walk again, nor even live for six months, and now many years later he got up out of his wheelchair and walked his daughter down the aisle.
When we talk about inspiring moments of courage and examples of never giving up hope, this story is one of the incredible ones. Not only did this man defy all odds against him and show that faith is stronger than doctors’ words, he also lived a whopping ten years after his fatal diagnosis!
“Mom and Dad taught us to face whatever life may bring with extraordinary courage and compassion,” said Moore.
