Three baby black bears got stuck in a dumpster after getting the top latch open, and weren’t a able to get out.
A camera caught them on tape in Ruidoso, New Mexico, with a worried mama bear nearby.
This daring couple, Tom and Shirley, was undeterred by Mama, and mounted a compassionate rescue. They had heard the babies crying over the night before, outside their home.
They drove by in a pickup truck with a ladder, and lowered it into the dumpster so the bears were able to climb back out.
The couple respectfully kept their distance and drove away once the ladder was placed in the dumpster.
Later, Shirley Schenk told ABC News: “They know how to open the latch to the dumpster. This mother is notorious in the neighborhood.”
“I was not scared. I had my husband driving and I knew we’d drop it and go. I would have never done that on foot.
Far from being a one-off, the couple say they have performed this kind of rescue on two other occasions and keep a ladder by their garage door for this very purpose.
Shirley added that the black bears are seen about twice a week and are rarely aggressive.
