Fire Kills 11 at a Senior Citizens Home in Japan
Eleven people have been killed in a fire at a care home for elderly people in Japan.
The fire engulfed the three-story building in Sapparo in northern Japan on Wednesday night.
The building was not fitted with sprinklers, according to Sky News, because under Japanese law it was not required to have them.
Footage shows what witnesses described as a “huge” blaze, with flames and smoke pouring out of the building.
Fire department officials said residents were in their 40s to 80s and were welfare recipients, according to ABC News.
Eight men and three women perished in the fire.
Five other residents were rescued, with three of them needing hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
