Imagine stumbling on an NT$50 coin (approx. US$1.61) on the street. What would be your next move? Since it’s just a few pennies, some people would pocket it. But for one 4-year-old boy in Nanzih District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, he took this matter seriously.

Having been taught the value of honesty, the boy decided to return the NT$50 coin to its rightful owner. In order to find the owner though, the boy had to go to the police station. However, he was scared to make the trip alone. So, the boy’s mother asked his brother and a few neighborhood kids, aged 5 to 6, to accompany him.

Eventually, the boy and four other kids nervously walked into the police station to report the case. The police were surprised to see the children, and they figured out what happened out of a conversation.

Wang Lizhen, deputy police chief of Nanzih Police Station, Jiachang Branch, told TVBS, “Because the child is very young, he is very scared. He is afraid that the police think he is a thief and will arrest him. He only has the courage to enter the police station after his mother proposed having his brother to accompany him.”

What did the police do next?

The boy was taught not to take other people’s money. If the police told the boy to keep the money because it’s a small sum, what would he think? Therefore, the police decided to treat it as a matter of grave importance.

The police then spent half an hour with the boy to carefully jot down the details to file a police report.

Kudos to the police for handling the matter patiently to let the boy and his companions know they were doing the right thing. The boy’s parents also did a great job in instilling the value of honesty in him. Many kids can learn from this young lad!
