Whether it was fate or simply a random encounter, the day Pastor Tim Jones and Don Herbert first met will probably be a day that neither will ever forget.
According to WBTV at the time Herbert and Jones met for the first time, Herbert was in stage 5 kidney failure. He was in desperate need of a new kidney.
“I’m pretty much at the end of my rope with my kidneys, they’re shutting down completely,” he told WBTV.
Little did he know that the man he crossed paths with two months earlier would step up and donate him his kidney.
Herbert and his wife were at a yard sale when Herbert wandered into a church.
The church was having a craft sale and the church’s pastor sat near the front door, waiting to greet people and playing one of his favorite songs.
“I wasn’t even going to get out of the car, but I heard music coming out of the church so I got out,” Herbert said.
He went into the church and struck up a conversation with Pastor Tim Jones. The two bonded over the song playing, “Sow Mercy” by the Gaither Vocal Band, which happened to be both of their favorite songs, and then they went their separate ways.
Herbert and Jones bonded over their admiration of a gospel song.

Shortly after Herbert met the pastor he received devastating news. He was in stage 5 kidney failure and needed a kidney transplant. There was another option, dialysis, but that would mean he would have to stop going on the road as a gospel singer.
He and his wife reached out to their family and friends to see if anyone would be willing to be a living donor, but after little success they took to social media to ask for help.
Jones saw the Facebook post and decided he had to at least try and help.
“I prayed for peace with it and a couple of days later God gave me peace,” Jones told WBTV. “I told my wife we’re going to do this.”
After seeing Herbert needed a new kidney, Jones decided to get tested to see if he was a match.
After undergoing multiple tests, doctors discovered the two were a perfect match! Jones was about to change Herbert’s life for the better, but what he didn’t know what that he was also about to change his life as well, only not in a way he could have ever expected.
Jones was scheduled for surgery first, followed by Herbert, but when Jones’ surgery seemed to be taking longer than anticipated everyone began to worry.
Jones went into surgery first, and while he was in surgery doctors discovered a deadly aneurysm in an artery behind his kidney.
The surgery is about to start for preacher Tim. God Bless him and Sherry and Taylor. Thank you Tim for giving Don his life back!
“The bulging vein was like a ticking time bomb,” Jones told TODAY. “When it ruptures, there is near-certain death.”
Luckily the doctors were able to remove it before it burst.
“Tim, you saved Don’s life today, but in the process, you saved your own!” Jones’ doctors told him after the surgery.
Since Jones donated his kidney to Herbert the two have remained friends and have even ministered together. And both truly believe that it was fate that brought them together.
“I stood back in awe of how God can work, with doing something like this,” Herbert told CBN. “How He directed me to a yard sale on a Saturday to meet a pastor that would be willing to give me a kidney, and not only be a blood type match but everything, he was a perfect match.”
