Colene Maleney was at the airport with her young son and husband and just wanted to grab a quick meal before their flight, to San Diego, where the family was planning to move.
So they sat down at one of the airport restaurants together for lunch, when halfway through the meal a lady quickly passed by, and left them a note.
“I wanted to offer to hold your sweet baby while you both ate lunch,” the note read, “but my husband said I’d look like a stalker. 🙂 So, I’m buying your lunch instead.”
“Enjoy that sweet baby – we have teenagers and know what’s ahead for you, so snuggle your wee one while you can.”
The note was so sweet that Colene was brought to tears. She got up from her seat and made to chase the couple down, to invite them to have lunch together so they could spend the fleeting moments they had now to talk.
They ended up parting ways without exchanging contact information, but afterwards, Colene posted the note to social media.
It traveled through Reddit and Facebook, and then made it onto the community page Love What Matters, where Colene found the note herself.
“I love how much this is still being passed around. It’s been four years!!” she commented.
Colene said they ended up putting the note in a pretty little gold frame and hung it up in the living room, “to remind us of such beautiful kindness in this world, to remind us to be kind ourselves and most importantly to remind us to enjoy every waking moment with our two little boys, whether it be trying, goofy, fun or exhausting.”
“This wasn’t just an act of kindness that lasted a day,” she wrote. “It has had ripple effects that has reached our souls that day and every day after.”
“Yes, she was a stranger and I’m not naive of this scary world we live in. Stranger or not, ignoring her off to hold our baby, they still paid for our hot meal. And her words were genuine. My husband ended up chasing them down in the airport to thank them and invited them to sit awhile. They were such lovely people. I’m so glad this has touched SO many people as it has touched us. Let’s spread the love❤️” Colene wrote.
She never expected that the woman she met at the airport would find this post as well. A friend of her’s had tagged her in this post, and she thought, that must have been four or five years ago!
Julie shared this with her husband, saying “I wonder how that sweet family is doing!??” and then she saw Colene’s comment.
“Colene!! This was me!!!! I wrote this!!!” commented Julie Dampier Cook. It was at the Denver airport, she remembered, and they were both on their way to California.
“I ached to hold that baby, mostly bc I saw how tired you must have been, traveling w a young baby, and I wanted to give you a little break so you could eat,” Julie wrote. “(You had a big fat burger, which I remember being happy about, bc you were getting that protein — isn’t that funny to remember such a a silly memory?! )”
“And here you are!!! Ahhh… Feels serendipitous and this all makes me so happy happy happy. ❤️❤️❤️”
Colene then replied,”You have an amazing memory. You are exactly right! And I was exhausted…have been ever since!😂 we had a second boy last year 😍 just look at what you started!”
“Who would have thought?? I love, love, LOVE that this happened and we got to reconnect again.😘”
