Officer Nearly Hit by Passing Car During Traffic Stop

A New Jersey police officer is lucky to be alive after a car narrowly missed hitting him during a routine traffic stop. Officer Bakker in Hamilton Township was just getting out of his patrol car on the highway shoulder when a passing car came speeding by.

The entire incident was caught on the police car’s dashcams. One angle shows the officer pulling up behind a stopped vehicle on the shoulder of the road. A second camera, from the rear of the patrol car, shows a car quickly approaching, then Officer Bakker jumping out of its way just in time. The car then comes to an abrupt stop as it hits the patrol car.

On the police department’s Facebook page where the video was posted, they remind drivers why the Move Over Law is so important:
“Motor vehicle stops can be one of the most dangerous times for a police officer, for many reasons, including passing motorists. … When observing a stationary police vehicle with flashing lights activated, motorists should change lanes, if possible, or slow down and proceed slowly and carefully past the emergency vehicle, and always be prepared to stop.”
