Most U.S. recycled paper, plastic, and cardboard is exported to China for processing. Now however, China is restricting how much of these waste products they will accept from the U.S., creating a major problem the nations recyclables.

China is also demanding the materials they do accept be more pure and clean, which makes it easier and more profitable for them to process.

Republic Services, one of the nation’s largest waste hauling and recycling operations, is asking their customers to help. The company sent a mass mailing out this week, asking customers to wipe out food containers, put nothing greasy in the recycle bin, and make sure all plastics are clean and dry.
