Schoolboy, 16, Hailed the World’s Tallest Teenager
A boy from Britain is being hailed the tallest teenager in the world.
Brandon Marshall, 16, is seven feet and four inches—and still growing.
His mother, 49-year-old Lynne Quelch, said people stop him for photographs when they walk down the street.
“When people notice his height, he says ‘oh here we go again, yes I am tall, yes I am Britain’s tallest teenager,'” she said.
The teenager said he was a “normal size” until the age of nine.
“I then had a big growth spurt. I was about 6 feet when I was about 13 and I started to grow a lot more by then,” he said. “When I was in year nine I got to 6 feet 7 inches and in year 10 I got to 7 feet.”
The teenager, who could slam dunk at the age of 13, trains three times a week and has been selected for the Wales National Basketball team. He is training for his first professional match and will be going to Lithuania next month.
Known to his friends as “Tiny”, Brandon often struggles with everyday tasks that people take for granted.
“He does tend to struggle with roofs, ceilings, doorways,” his mother said.
She added they may need to extend the size of his bedroom to fit in a £1,000 ($1,400) 8-foot-long bed, that can be expanded to nine feet if needed.
He has size 17 feet and consumes 8,000 calories a day because of his height.
Doctors tested him for Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of connective issues, but the results were negative. The genetics team at Addenbrooke’s hospital want to investigate why he is reaching such dramatic heights.
Previous tests showed that he is missing chromosome 12, known as the height cropper chromosome.
“His height gene is mutated, so they are looking into it further because it has only ever been seen once before,” his mother said. “But medically, everyday wise, he just gets on with it. He just has to bend through everything so he doesn’t clonk his head.”
Brandon’s 30-year-old brother, Zak is 6 feet 4 inches and his 25-year-old sister, Zoe is 5 feet 6 inches. His younger brother Jordan, 12, who has cerebral palsy is at an average height for his age.
Brandon’s mum is 5 feet 11 inches and his father is 6 feet 10 inches.
The former record holder for the tallest teenager was American Broc Brown, who is 7 feet 8 inches tall, and turned 20 last year.
