Here’s How One Florida Father Changes His Son’s Diaper Without a Change Table

Donte Palmer, a father of three, from Saint Augustine, Florida, posted a plea on social media after his miserable experience in a men’s bathroom one Saturday in September 2018.

That day, Palmer and his family were out running some much-needed errands. Following that, Palmer treated his hardworking wife to a nice family dinner.

While waiting for their meal to be served, Palmer’s 12-year-old son had to use the bathroom.

“I figured, let’s kill two birds with one stone. I took both my sons to use the bathroom and to be changed,” Palmer wrote for Love What Matters.

So, he brought his 1-year-old son, Liam, to the bathroom for a diaper change.

However, like many other men’s restrooms, there was no changing station in the restaurant’s male bathroom.

In the end, Palmer had no choice but to squat, and used his lap as a table to change Liam’s diaper.

“I’m used to going places and changing my son on my lap,” Palmer shared. “The only difference is, my oldest son (who was my helper this time around), was not only handing me wipes and diapers, but he also took some snapshots in the mix of things.”

Later, Palmer’s son showed the photo to his mother, letting her know “how daddy changes his little brother (on his lap).”

Seeing the photo, the family laughed, and Palmer’s wife pointed out “she’s never had to change him this way” as there’s always a changing table in women’s restrooms, especially in high end restaurants.

“Not until my wife brought it to my attention, did I start thinking, ‘Is our lack of fatherhood that bad in our society where restaurants don’t even bother to put changing tables in men’s restrooms?’” Palmer wrote.

Hoping to show there are good fathers out there who “don’t mind staying up all night with a crying baby, or changing diapers,” he shared the photo on social media.

In an Instagram post, Palmer wrote that something needs to be done to address the issue.

“This is a serious post!!! What’s the deal with not having changing tables in men’s bathroom as if we don’t exist!! clearly we do this often because look how comfortable my son is. It’s routine to him!” he wrote.

“Let’s fix this problem!” he added. “Let’s show the innovation of fathers!”

Hats off to Palmer for helping his wife care for the baby!

Certainly, with more and more fathers playing a greater role in childcare, there’s a need for changing tables in men’s restrooms. Hopefully, Palmer’s plea will bring attention to this matter.
