When a baby is on the way, families usually say they don’t what gender it is—“As long as it’s healthy,” etc. etc.
But, deep down, everybody’s rooting for one or the other. Maybe you already have a few boys and finally want a girl, or vice versa. It’s understandable.
It’s especially understandable if you’re the only man in the family after three generations of females.
That was the case for James Patrick of Breese, Illinois, a grandpa who’s family line consists of two sisters, four daughters, and two granddaughters.
So he may have been just slightly disappointed when his daughter Carie announced her next child would be another girl.
But he got the surprise of a lifetime when he went to the hospital to see his newest granddaughter.
After meeting the baby, and joking with his daughter about family features like dark hair and long fingers, Carie unraveled the baby’s blanket to reveal a very unusual onesie:
“FYI: I’m a boy!”
Confused, Jim asks where they got such an inaccurate shirt.
“I ordered it,” Carie replies.
“Because it’s a boy.”
Watch the heartwarming video below:
The entire family was in on it, and kept the secret from Jim for months.
“Dad has been the only boy in a long line of girls,” Carie told Caters News, as reported by Inside Edition, “So when we found out the baby’s gender at 20 weeks, we knew we had to keep it from him.”
“You’re the only one who didn’t know, Jim!” one voice says.
“You brats!” an emotional Jim jokes with his family.
Pulling off the surprise wasn’t easy.
“The problem was our daughter, who is 4, already knew so we had to talk her in to keeping it a secret,” Carie said.
But the youngest in the family went along with it successfully, and she was elated when the secret was revealed, ready with a matching t-shirt for grandpa.
What makes the surprise even more special? It happened to be Jim’s 49th birthday.
And he got the most unexpected gift of all: a male heir to pass down his manly wisdom.
“He was thrilled for another grandbaby either way,” Carie told the Daily Mail, “But the way he found out that it was a boy and on his birthday as well, that was just the best.”
Congratulations to the whole family!
