A math problem is going viral, and despite its simplicity, people are debating on its answer.
The question was posted on YouTube account MindYourDecisions: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
The problem went viral and drew millions of comments on Facebook, Twitter, and social media websites.
The acronyms PEMDAS/BODMAS operations can be used on the problem.
According to MindYourDecisions’ website, “First evaluate Parentheses/Brackets, then evaluate Exponents/Orders, then evaluate Multiplication-Division, and finally evaluate Addition-Subtraction.”
And it gets an answer of 9.
But others did the equation this way: 6/2(3) — which gives you the next equation, 6/6, and the answer of 1. People get the 1 answer because of an older way of interpreting the division symbol.
