Getting children to understand the importance of general hygiene is not that easy. Thankfully there are some ridiculously creative adults who make it their mission to teach kids about keeping clean. For example, this father had to have a tooth fairy teach his son about dental hygiene, and this teacher made sure her students understood germs by using three slices of bread.
A teacher, who is also a school nurse, at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina is drawing praise from parents and teachers for her unique way of teaching her students about how important it is to wash your hands.
She uses a few slices of bread for her little experiment.
In a post she shared on Facebook, Allen explains her mad scientist experiment meant to show students what happens when you don’t wash your hands.
She wrote that for her lesson she placed a slice of bread in a bag using a hand she covered with a glove—the glove is important. This slice of bread acts as the control. She then uses her bare hand and takes another piece of bread and places that in another bag.
Now comes the fun part.
She passes around a slice of bread for all of the kids to touch.
Once she handles two slices of bread, she let her students touch the final slice. That also gets put in a bag. After all three slices are in their respective bags, it’s time to sit back and wait for the magic to happen.
Eventually the bread that all of the students touched will start to turn a not so pleasant color—because of all the germs—and if that isn’t enough to scare a child into washing their hands we don’t know what will.
