30-year-old Reyna Lucero Casellanos went from having stage 3 cancer to battling stage 4 breast cancer in 2016. The battle with her diagnosis was draining and a struggle on Casellanos and her loved ones, but the 18 months of fighting only made her stronger.
The long radiation and chemotherapy treatments and the serious nature of her disease opened up her eyes to something just as important as her health: her father.
While confronting her difficulties face on, she knew she had to confront the time that passed between her and her dad, Alfredo Aguilar.
When Casellanos was young, her mother and father got a divorce. Casellanos moved to California with her mother and left her dad in Mexico.
“Neither of us had the right documents to go and visit one another, so over the years we just drifted apart, never getting around to see one another,” she said, according to Daily Mail.
20 years later, the mother of three decided it was time go back and visit her dad.
”Going through this hard process in my life and knowing that he was going through his own medical condition made me want to see him again.” Her father had been injured, which caused him to need back surgery. The two obviously needed to reconnect with each other.
Casellanos’ five-hour plane ride was full of anxious but happy smiles. “I am so excited,” she announced to the camera while she was on the plane. Her excitement could be easily seen on video, as she spotted her dad in the airport.
“I was so excited, but equally nervous—on a scale of one to ten, I was definitely a ten in my nerves.”
The two embraced in an emotional silent hug and Casellanos explained that being back with her dad “felt unbelievably good.”
“I couldn’t stop telling him how much I’d missed him, and he kept telling me how much he loves me.”
