Enduring love is becoming increasingly rare in the world. For those fortunate enough to stay in love with the person they tied the knot with, life is a little bit easier.
But sadly, the loss of a significant other after building a lifetime of memories is devastating. After decades of blissful marriage, a man identified only as Chuck was going through the pains of losing his lovely wife.
Chuck was grieving the loss of his wife of 75 years.
Chuck’s neighbors were concerned about him. The couple married when they were bright-eyed 18-year-olds. After 75 years together, the adjustment was going to be difficult, and for a 93-year-old man, there were legitimate concerns that he wouldn’t be able to get through it.
That’s when Mitzy the puppy showed up at Nancy Saldivar Contreras’s house.
“I’m convinced little Mitzy was dropped down from heaven, into my lap, so I could deliver her to my dear neighbor, Chuck,” Contreras said in a letter shared on Ellen Nation.
After finding the adorable puppy, Contreras was making the rounds in her neighborhood to see if anyone had lost their dog. She knocked several times on Chuck’s house and was about to walk away when he answered the door.
When Chuck saw the puppy he started smiling.
“Chuck looked at me holding the puppy and his face lit up as he smiled from ear to ear,” Contreras said.
Chuck said the puppy wasn’t his, but when Contreras asked if he’d be willing to take care of her if nobody claimed her, he emphatically agreed. He was confident she belonged to someone and the owner would be found.
“After speaking with most of my neighbors, no one was missing their puppy. So, as I promised, I returned the puppy to Chuck,” Contreras said.
The neighbor said they would be posting a photo of the puppy on their community page, and if nobody claimed her there, Chuck would be able to keep her.
“As I handed Chuck the puppy, he began chuckling,” Contreras said. “She licked him and settled easily into his arms. I don’t think I have ever seen him so happy!”
Nobody ever came forward to claim the puppy, and neighbors say Mitzy has done wonders in cheering Chuck up.
“She keeps me busy with all her energy!” Chuck said.
The elderly man recently had several of his neighbors over so they could see the changes he’d made to his house to accommodate the new pup.
He wanted to make sure his home and backyard were a “safe and has a comfortable place to play.”
Mitzy doesn’t erase the fact that Chuck is mourning the passing of his wife, but he now has a distraction that keeps him active and makes him happy.
“He said Mitzy is good company—he now has someone to regularly talk to,” Contreras said.
