Police officer Cody Garrett of Spartanburg, South Carolina knew that a photo of himself posing with his newly rescued kitten was cute. He just didn’t know how cute until it went viral online.

The image racked up 2 million views in just two days. Marriage proposals flooded in soon after.

The 28-year-old-cop had found the kitten under a dumpster, and adopted it and gave it the name Squirt.

“Another officer had found her in the rain under a trash dumpster and brought her into the department,” Garett told ABC News last year. “I offered to take her because I have another rescue at home who is currently nursing her four kittens.”

Garrett’s own cat, Toothless, had just given birth and took to Squirt happily.

“That’s one of the only reasons I brought her home instead of taking her to the Humane Society,” he said. “She needed a mom so it worked out.”

Garrett found his cat Toothless in his own backyard, and said she was actually even smaller than Squirt at the time.

“My son and I were playing in the yard and I almost stepped on Toothless. She couldn’t even walk she was so tiny. We nursed Toothless back to health and she had four kittens three weeks ago.”

“That’s one of the only reasons I brought her home instead of taking her to the Humane Society,” he said. “She needed a mom so it worked out.”

Garrett also has two rescue pups, including a one-eyed pup named Mike Wazowski.

Soon after he made the initial posts, he received an stream of “marry me’s” in the comments.

Garrett’s longtime girlfriend was not too concerned with the comments. “She knows I love her,” he told Huffington Post.

As much as Garret is not looking for romantic attention, he does hope that more people will have a better perception about cops.

He explains, “Police officers aren’t the enemy. We do have families like everyone else, we like rescuing animals, play video games and not like what you tend to see over the news.”

Squirt has since gotten much bigger.
