Each year as the month of March comes to an end, most people in America would have enjoyed the boisterous fun and parades of St. Patrick’s Day or must have wrapped up the “March Madness” of the NCAA tournament. Whatever it is, they often forget that a very special day is silently sneaking upon them.
That was definitely the case for Rayena Wesson, who is a trauma nurse in Birmingham, Alabama. Wesson was taking a break from a shift at work one night when she received an ominous text from her husband, Bobby.
The two had been planning to take some pictures with their son Deacon, who was three years old at the time. But on April 1, Bobby texted his wife, letting her know that they might need to postpone or cancel the pictures. When Rayena demanded to know more about why her husband suddenly didn’t want to go forward with the photo shoot, she smelled trouble.
Bobby, meanwhile, seemed to be bracing her for some bad news. “Remember how when u were pregnant I took care of everything and cooked and cleaned and wouldn’t let you life a finger bc I love u so much?” he messaged her. At this point, she knew something was really wrong. “I swear to God you better tell me,” she replied.
In response, Bobby texted a picture in which he is casually and lovingly brushing back his full mane, sitting next to his son who has a full head of floppy blond hair. That’s when Rayena went ballistic. “ANSWER THE PHONE,” she practically shouts.
Bobby had seen how invested Rayena was in the photoshoot and knew he had found a golden opportunity for one of his legendary pranks. “She was so meticulous in planning these photos and picking out the photographer and the outfit,” he told TODAY.
After piquing her interest, Bobby proceeded to text a picture of long locks of blond hair, just the color of Deacon’s, lying on the floor of their house next to some electric clippers, claiming “he got the trimmers.” As Rayena went into a frenzy of calling and texting, Bobby did the one thing he knew would make her most upset. “I knew that not answering the phone was really going to set her off,” he told TODAY.
Bobby tried to calm Rayena down, claiming he had “fixed” the problem and evened out Deacon’s haircut. He even sent a picture of the shorn boy to his wife, prompting her outraged response: “Omg my baby my sweet baby looks like a potato.”
Bobby then claimed little Deacon was incredibly sad because of losing his hair. Desperate times called for desperate measures, he argued. “He’s sooo sad. I think he’d feel better if I shave my head too,” he messaged, including a picture that prominently featured his floppy hair. “Say goodbye to it. He won’t stop crying. Gotta do it.”
Rayena went into orbit at the thought of the two guys in her life both having shaved heads, just in time for the family pictures she had been planning for a long time. “DO NOT SHAVE YOUR HEAD,” she wrote. “Pick UP THE PHONE NOW BOBBY.”
But her husband told her it was too late and sent a picture that could qualify for the worst haircuts of all time.
By this time, Bobby had taken the prank far enough and finally revealed what had been going on the whole time. After Rayena threatened to knock his head off before the hair could grow back, he revealed that the pictures were nothing but the handiwork of photoshop.
While Bobby had been planning the prank for over a month and a half, when he finally got a chance to execute it, on one of the rare occasions when Rayena had a meal break at work, he was delighted and terrified. “My hands were shaking because I was so excited to finally pull it off,” he told TODAY.
Thankfully, the pictures were able to happen without any issues and Bobby managed to avoid any physical injury, but it certainly was an epic April Fool’s prank.
