As we can’t win every battle in life, it takes heart to find the good even in a disappointing situation. It certainly was the case for this hopeful singer on “The X Factor” in the U.K., who turned a “no” from the judges into an unforgettable moment.

Sam Black, 27, is an engaging and handsome young man who loves singing. That’s why he left his job as a plasterer to spend a week at “The X Factor’s” boot camp in preparation for an audition to be on the show. Yet, he wasn’t feeling all that confident when it came time for the audition.

The driving force behind his dreams of stardom was his girlfriend and their 8-month-old baby; he wanted them to be proud of him. “If I could … make a better life for me and my family,” said an emotional Sam.

The song he chose, a rendition of Del Shannon’s “Runaway,” did not impress Simon Cowell, one of the judges: “I would not have advised you to sing this song,” he said, as he stopped the audition.

“Can I suggest that we just hear you … we slow the song down so at least we can hear a version of the song and hear your voice properly because this is going to be a struggle otherwise.”

Sam took it on the chin and started again but slower; however, the judges decided he wasn’t good enough to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Simon expressed his sentiments toward the young man despite having to turn him down, “I think people are gonna really like you … but we are gonna have to say no.”

To this, Sam responded: “Is there something I can do before I go … cos I’m never gonna get this chance.” It seemed he had something special planned while he was on stage, a surprise.

Simon granted Sam a chance to unveil his surprise. That’s when he asked his girlfriend to come up on stage while he got down on one knee and proposed. “Can I get a yes off you,” he asked. Speechless, she nodded, and they embraced, with the audience roaring in the background.

“You’ve got yourself one heck of a nice guy there, Emma,” Simon said, as the newly engaged couple left the stage.

Even though his singing career was over before it started, Sam kept his head high and transformed a moment of disappointment into one of rejoicing. It is very refreshing to see Sam prepared to make a commitment and take the responsibility of fatherhood seriously.
