Shen Yun Deeply Touches Japanese Psychiatric Professor

NAGOYA, Japan—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company happened to kick off its 2020 Asia Pacific tour on Christmas day, in Japan’s Nagoya. Hirose Yukio, professor of psychiatry at Aichi University of Education, came up with a great idea of inviting his wife to see the Shen Yun performance premiered at Aichi Prefectural Art Theater in Nagoya on the evening of December 25 as a special Christmas present.

After attending the performance, the couple was deeply touched by the authentic traditional Chinese culture interpreted in Shen Yun’s program. Hirose Yukio was very happy to get further insight into authentic Chinese culture by watching Shen Yun.

“My concept of traditional Chinese culture has been changed,” he said. “I found that I seem to have a keen interest in the profound 5,000-year [Chinese] history again.”

“As Japanese culture originated from Chinese traditional culture, [Shen Yun] acts as a bridge [between the two cultures] through an artistic form,” he added. He also hopes to convey his perception to the Japanese younger generation, so that they are able to learn more about the link between these two traditional cultures. He wishes younger generations to “create new values together, and coordinate with others together.”

Hirose Yukio’s wife is a psychiatric consultant. She was also fascinated by the Shen Yun performance on Christmas Day.

“The dance performances are full of gracefulness and strength. They are indeed very wonderful and impressive,” she said.

Deeply moved by the spiritual connotations in the performance, she noted, “It is very touching that the contemporary events happening nowadays are performed in an artistic form, and let the message get across to the world’s people.”

Awed by Shen Yun’s music that perfectly blends Western and Eastern music, the psychiatric consultant praised it, saying, “The music is terrific. It has the strong power of penetration and expression.”

“The power is embedded in peacefulness. It touches the bottom of the human heart by means of the power in peacefulness,” she added.

Shen Yun’s website explains, “First, the Western orchestra serves as a foundation, accentuating the distinct sound of Chinese instruments. Second, the bedrock of soul-stirring melodies from the ancient Middle Kingdom is fully brought to life by a Western symphony. This is what makes Shen Yun’s music unique and is a new frontier in classical music.”

Hirose Yukio spoke highly of the perfect combination of the Western and Chinese music instruments in the orchestra.

“In terms of [Shen Yun music’s] perfect coordination, it has come up with something new through harmonization,” he said.

The couple was also in awe at Shen Yun’s vibrant costumes.

“The costumes are very beautiful! The traditions of various ethnic groups’ costumes are demonstrated through the performances of stories. It’s really very good,” he continued.

Mrs. Hirose paid much attention to Shen Yun’s digital backdrops that is patented under U.S. laws.

“The backdrops are very natural,” Hirose Yukio added. “They exquisitely demonstrate the background [of the locale of the stories].”

Many audience members are thrilled by the opening piece, and the couple was no exception.

“The opening piece demonstrates why we all came to this world,” said Hirose Yukio.

“This main theme links to the entire performance throughout the show. The legends that we descended from heaven, and gods create everything, etc., are performed through stories, and each story is related to others,” added Mrs. Hirose. “It is indeed very touching.”
