SAN LORENZO DE EL ESCORIAL, Spain—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts brought 5,000 years of Chinese culture to life on stage in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain, from Feb. 25 to March 1.

Audience members at the performance on Feb. 26 expressed their appreciation for Shen Yun’s skill and artistry.

“It was very colorful, I think it surprised us all. We saw, first, the great professionalism of all the artists as well as the orchestra,” Spanish Member of Parliament Alberto Fabra said.

“They were so professional, all very coordinated,” Silvia Villar Rodríguez, a psychologist at the Spanish Labour Ministry, said. “Above all, it was very cheerful because it was so colorful and dynamic. I thought it was spectacular. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

Cristina How, who works in public relations, praised Shen Yun’s dancers, saying, “The dancers are amazing. They’re so disciplined and so passionate. You can see in their face they’re just having a great time and they love it.”

“I think the costumes have been beautiful, and the way that the dancing expresses the stories and the emotions has been really lovely to see,” she added.

Shen Yun seeks to revive the spirituality and core values of traditional Chinese culture—a heritage from “China before communism.”

“[Shen Yun] conveyed to us what Chinese culture has been like for centuries and millennia,” Mr. Fabra, who is also a technical architect, said. “And I think it had an impact on all of us: seeing the strength, the energy, the capacity for reflection, the purity, the determination, the depth in terms of values—that is certainly reflected in the time we have been watching the show.”

“Learning a little bit about the history of China, and some of the stories and the folklore, it’s been really interesting,” Ms. How said. “It’s been fantastic … the kind of wonder in the stories and that connection to something a bit bigger than yourself.”

“There were a lot of themes of community and family, and the importance of staying together and looking after each other,” she also noted. “That’s been really nice.”

Audience member Jose Antonio Rodriguez, an industrial engineer, said this is the kind of culture missing in today’s world.

“It’s their tradition, which is the basis for everything, and these ancient cultures always have that component of respect, hard work, wisdom, poise—all of which are what we are losing today and really need to keep in mind more,” he said.

Mr. Fabra said, “I think the possibility of learning other ways of understanding life through culture is fundamental. And we are lucky in Spain to be able to enjoy this show.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Bilbao, Spain, on March 3–5, and Valencia, Spain, on March 7–10.
