HOUSTON— “This performance was truly spectacular,” said professional musician Sian Taylor, praising Shen Yun’s orchestra as being of an exceptionally high standard and calling it “exquisite” and “splendid.”
Ms. Taylor is not only a professional musician, but also a manager and DJ. On the afternoon of Jan. 31, she attended the second performance by the Shen Yun New World Company at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center in Cypress, Texas. After the show, she said she believes that compassion is what elevates the performance to an entirely different level.
As a first-time viewer, Ms. Taylor described the production as highly refined and said the dancers’ execution was flawless. “It was very well produced,” she said. “The dancing was immaculately executed. I was very impressed.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its mission is to revive China’s culture as it existed before decades of communist rule nearly destroyed it.
“I was overwhelmed by the beauty and passion of the dancers and singers,” Ms. Taylor exclaimed.
She also offered high praise for Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which blends Eastern and Western instruments. “The music was beautifully arranged,” she said, noting the musicians’ high level of performance.
As a professional musician, she explained that she naturally pays attention not only to the sound, but also to the visual elements and how everything connects on stage.
“The conductor was absolutely on point—pure precision,” she said. “Everything worked as a unified whole. The communication between the conductor and the dancers, the tempos—there were no missed cues. It was very clean and very tidy.”
She added that even setting aside professional considerations, the production was impressive as a whole. “From a layman’s point of view, it was a beautifully produced show,” she said. “The costumes were stunning, and the special effects were spectacular. I would highly recommend people coming to see the show.”
Reflecting on the spiritual aspects of the performance, Ms. Taylor said they add “another dimension,” making it “very clear why there’s so much passion on the stage.”
She said the show also resonated with her understanding of suffering in the world. “I understand oppression and the terrible things that happen,” she said. “To be brave enough to express peace, beauty, and spirituality—that’s a very brave thing to do.”
Through classical Chinese, folk, and story-based dances, the artists bring China’s rich history and culture to life, emphasizing traditional moral values, such as kindness and forgiveness.
As a pacifist, Ms. Taylor felt a strong connection to these values. She noted that, even when villains appeared in certain scenes, they were not destroyed but offered compassion and a chance to change. “Those kind people extended a hand of friendship,” she said, “choosing a peaceful way of life over violence.”
Ms. Taylor said the core message she took away from the performance was one of “passion, kindness, and compassion.”
“I deeply believe in compassion,” she said.
In closing, she once again encouraged others to see Shen Yun, emphasizing that its spiritual depth is what makes the performance especially compelling.
