GOLD COAST, Australia—Retired artist Janice Cameron attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ debut at the HOTA Home of the Arts many years ago and fell in love with the experience. So, when she found out that the company would return with an evening show on Feb. 27, she decided it would be the perfect birthday gift for her daughter, Karin Driessen, a professional singer.

Shen Yun turned out just as wonderful as Ms. Cameron remembered, and the mother-daughter duo had a great time.

“We are blown away. Absolutely fantastic. It was a beautiful, beautiful show,” Ms. Cameron said.

“Not only were the dancers brilliant and beautiful, but the artistic ability of whoever did all that backdrop was beautiful. The costumes were beautiful, the colors of the costumes were beautiful—I could not fault the show, not at all. It was stunning, stunningly beautiful.”

Among the many moments that gave her goosebumps, she especially enjoyed the dance “Peacock Fairies,” in which celestial maidens moved gracefully amid a sea of clouds.

Based in New York, Shen Yun artists are masters of classical Chinese dance, an ancient and highly expressive art form dating back thousands of years. Unlike the modern, military-influenced styles often seen in China today, Shen Yun preserves and performs this tradition in its most authentic form, as it was originally passed down through generations.

The backdrop Ms. Cameron referred to features innovative, patented technology developed by Shen Yun. According to the company’s website, the seamless interaction between the digital projection and the performers on stage creates a magical illusion for the audience, allowing storytelling without limits.

Ms. Driessen was delighted with her birthday gift. “The costumes were absolutely amazing, elegant,” she said. “It was all good, it was all fabulous.”

As a singer, she was particularly impressed by Shen Yun’s bel canto soloist and the live orchestra that blends the best of Eastern and Western musical traditions.

Using a classical Western orchestration as its foundation, the orchestra highlights traditional Chinese melodies and instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa, an ancient lute.

“The lovely lady had an absolutely stunning voice, and I also loved when [the artist] was playing the two-stringed [erhu.] It’s fabulous to me because I’m so musical,” she said.

“Also, the orchestra—that was incredible. I picked up a little bit of Western in the orchestra as well as the Asian influence.”

Ms. Cameron added that as a Westerner, she loved hearing Chinese melodies. “To me, that was different,” she said, “it was very nice on my ears listening to it. I really enjoyed the orchestra very much.”

Established in 2006, Shen Yun is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Each season, the artists return with a brand-new set of choreography and musical compositions.

The company’s mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture and share with the world the splendor of China before communism.

For Ms. Cameron, Shen Yun conveyed “goodness, kindness, and love.” She said she urges anyone who has not yet seen the performance to “go and see it, experience it, enjoy it.”

Ms. Driessen wholeheartedly agreed. “My mum has it in a nutshell: love. Inner peace, inner love,” she said.

Shen Yun is “probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.”
