SAN LORENZO de EL ESCORIAL, Spain—Entrepreneur Oscar Dorado Urbistondo and his wife attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ second performance at the Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial, on Feb. 26. The evening, they said, was unlike anything they had experienced before.

Mr. Dorado is the president of a Spanish medical technology company. His wife, Estela Santiago, is a writer and radio host. The couple expressed heartfelt admiration for the performance, describing it as a soul-stirring journey across time and space.

“It was absolutely incredible and beautiful,” Mr. Dorado said. “For us, it is completely different from what we usually see in Spain. The music, the dancers, the colors, the culture—it’s completely different. For us, it’s incredible.”

“Yes, absolutely,” he continued. “The choreography, the movements are very fluid. They’re beautiful.”

He also noted the seamless coordination between music and movement. “The movements and the music are absolutely connected, flowing in the same direction at the same moments. It’s very beautiful,” he said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance—one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Mr. Dorado shared that he had previously watched promotional images before attending in person. “I saw it in images before coming, and it’s beautiful,” he said, adding that the live performance was a striking experience for both of them.

When asked to describe the show as a writer, Ms. Santiago responded with emotion. “Exquisite. I loved it, I loved it. I loved it,” she said.

She described the performance as “a journey, like a dream—something that transports you. It also has that spiritual touch that I love—something that connects with the soul. Full of beauty, and very connected with the feminine—with that feminine touch.”

She explained that this feeling came from the performance as a whole. “I think it’s the ensemble—the music, the movements, everything. The beauty of what the performance conveys. Everything that connects with art connects with the spiritual, with the soul.”

Later, she added, “I have no words. There really are no words to describe the beauty, how impactful it is. Sometimes words cannot express what the soul feels.”

“It’s a journey in time,” she said. “Like a journey through time. Like stopping and suddenly traveling.”

With visible emotion, she shared her feelings from watching Shen Yun, “Emotion. Sensitivity, art, beauty. Something very deep. Sometimes you cannot put into words what it was. Suddenly, I say, ‘My God, this is like something from another world.’ Something very necessary in today’s world. It’s like being transported to another dimension that we have lost … like returning to the source, returning to the place.”

Shen Yun takes as its mission to revive through the arts 5,000 years of Chinese civilization—China before communism. By vividly portraying China’s ancient, divinely inspired culture on stage, the performance offers many audience members an eye-opening experience—one that stands in sharp contrast to the atheism prevalent in China today.
Mr. Dorado likewise reflected on the performance’s spiritual dimension. “That is beautiful because people now, at this moment, are not connected with the past or with the soul. It’s beautiful to see this kind of connection between the music, the dancers, the past, and the future,” he said.

“I think it’s a very clear message for the future,” he continued. “We can all live together with appreciation for the world. It’s beautiful. Absolutely. And it’s really important. It’s beautiful to be connected. It’s a pleasant experience.”

The couple also expressed regret that Shen Yun cannot perform in China.

“That is absolutely impossible with the communists,” Mr. Dorado said. “I know—it’s terrible. I have trade with China. It’s difficult. If you agree with the government, you can live very well. But if you are not aligned with the government, your life is completely in danger. It’s terrible, but that is the real situation.”
