TAINAN, Taiwan—George Wang knows the importance of being positive in life. As founder of a local Lions Club, an international service group that supports humanitarian efforts and community projects, he believes it is his responsibility to be a positive force in society. On April 2, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center, he said, “This is the performance the world needs.”

Heritage on Stage

“The show is beyond my expectations,” said Mr. Wang, the founder and president of Tainan Prospect Lions. He was seeing Shen Yun for the very first time.

“Shen Yun contains a variety of elements. In addition to the stage, backdrop, and the orchestra, there is also heritage,” he said. “It inherits the virtues and the essence of the Chinese traditional culture.”

“It portrays traditional stories, shows us the traditional values of the Chinese culture, such as loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, love, honesty, righteousness, and harmony,” Mr. Wang explained.

“Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” notes Shen Yun’s website.

Positive Energy

Mr. Wang pointed out that he was fully recharged with positive energy after the show. “Shen Yun helps people let go of negative energy, be recharged, and then spiritually be in a harmonious state,” he said.

“It shows us the sincerity and simplicity of the ancient people,” he said.

In modern times, “Competition exists everywhere,” he explained. “People struggle with stress in work and in life. We are unable to get rid of negative influences sometimes. As time passes, a negative force will fill up our mind and body.”

Only by improving oneself can helping others be possible, according to Wang. “A person can help others only after he has become positive by being benevolent and sincere, and having his body cleansed,” he believes and Shen Yun could bring out such change in a person.

Returning to True Nature

Surprised by the advanced technology Shen Yun deployed in its animated backdrop, Mr. Wang said that technology was something of a double-edged sword.

Shen Yun’s innovative backdrops, “With state-of-the-art graphics technology, Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one,” according to Shen Yun’s website.

Mr. Wang explained his viewpoint: “Modern technology can create things like destructive weapons, but if it is used for a good cause, it will help to bring prosperity.”

Shen Yun, in his view, has used technology perfectly. Reflecting back on what he had seen in the performance, he added, “We really have to return to our true nature, and to reflect and learn from a spiritual basis.”

Finally, Mr. Wang recommended others see the performance, not only once, but multiple times, since people could be enlightened with different virtues as Shen Yun put on new programs every year.

“If you are a parent who doesn’t have time to tell your children stories, bring them here to Shen Yun.”
