COSTA MESA, Calif.—Company director David Davidson is a devoted fan of Shen Yun Performing Arts. On March 15, he attended the company’s show for the third consecutive year at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

“Honestly, [Shen Yun] is probably my favorite event of the whole year. I love them,” he said enthusiastically.

“I love the colors and how [the show] is so different from other things you get to see, yet we can all relate to these things even [though Chinese culture] is thousands of years old. It’s uplifting.”

Mr. Davidson particularly appreciated Shen Yun’s live music, which seamlessly blends classical Western orchestration with ancient Chinese instruments to bring out the beauty of Eastern melodies.

“I love the music. I actually wish that they would advertise it more. It’s a live orchestra with all original music—it’s amazing,” he expressed. “We also go to [performances by] local orchestras, but this is so different. I really like it.”

The New York-based Shen Yun was founded by a group of leading Chinese artists seeking to bring China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture to life through dance and music.

Since its founding in 2006, Shen Yun has grown to include eight equally-sized companies. This year, the artists are set to perform in over 200 cities across five continents.

The company can be expected to return with a brand-new set of programs every season. So, no two years are alike.

Mr. Davidson also enjoyed the show’s many story-based dances that recount legends spanning ancient times to the modern day. He thought the divine elements included in some of the stories were very important.

“It’s something we don’t talk about enough. I really enjoy it. The [values of] loyalty, family, honesty—the main core of what makes us good humans,” he stated.

“Every year I tell people they need to go [see the show.] This year, my wife and I brought a friend, and I told my sister she needs to go. I love it.”
