AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France—After experiencing Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 16, several audience members shared their reaction to a production that goes far beyond dance. Combining aesthetic wonder, philosophical reflection, and cultural discovery, their testimonials illustrate the profound impact this company from New York is having worldwide with its presentation of the beauty of “China before communism.”

Classical Chinese dance, at the heart of Shen Yun, is an ancient artform that combines technique, expressiveness, and storytelling. It is distinguished by its jumps, pirouettes, and fluid movements, as well as its ability to convey emotions and historical narratives. Distinct from Western ballet, it places great emphasis on a dancer’s “inner spirit,” which is believed to guide their every movement.

“If I had to choose one word … it would be magnificent—it’s truly beautiful,” Michel Sienko, a former innovation executive, said. “And within that beauty, you find everything: color, dance, energy, and youth.”

He also applauded the quality of the choreography: “You have wonderful choreography. There’s a wonderful story.”
For Ariane and Jean-Pierre Gimond—a former business consultant and a former lawyer—the visual richness of Shen Yun was just as striking: “It was a beautiful show. Very colorful. Very lively.”

A Journey Through Tradition and Innovation

One of Shen Yun’s distinctive features is the connection between the dancers on stage and the animated backdrop, allowing the characters to transition from the real world into worlds imagined by Shen Yun’s artists. This innovative approach particularly appealed to Mrs. Gimond: “We really liked the blend of the screen and the interaction between the two. It was very inventive.”

Beyond the technical aspects, the audience was moved by the narrative element: “It also tells ancient tales,” Mr. Gimond, while Mrs. Gimond added, “There’s really a story behind it that touches us.”

This aspect particularly resonated with the audience: “There’s a philosophy behind it … there’s always a moral to the story,” Mr. Gimond said.

As a practitioner of tai chi and qigong, he says, “It really speaks to us.”

Michel Sienko even sees it as a universal foundation: “I think it’s the basis of everything … the spiritual aspect is a common factor.”

Eye-Opening

Throughout the performances, Shen Yun also addresses contemporary issues, including the suppression of spiritual practices in China, like Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong. This reality came as a surprise to some members of the audience.

“It’s very surprising that there hasn’t been any media coverage at all … we were quite shocked,” Mrs. Gimond said of the stories of persecution of people of faith in China.

This realization reinforces, for them, the importance of Shen Yun’s mission: “I think it’s wonderful. It needs to be shared with the world.”

Michel Sienko agrees: “The mission is truly wonderful all over the world … it showcases China’s youth and history.”

“It’s a must-see, it’s beautiful … the performers are amazing,” Mr. and Mrs. Gimond said in unison.

And beyond mere entertainment, it’s an all-encompassing experience that stays with you: “It’s not just a show. There’s more to it than that,” Mr. Gimond added.

“Hats off to the artists, really,” Mr. Sienko said.
