MEXICO CITY, Mexico—On the evening of May 3, Anita Sánchez Guerra, a councilwoman from Cuautla, Mexico, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. After the performance, she said she was deeply moved by the presentation of traditional Chinese culture and the values conveyed through the arts.

Ms. Sánchez described the performance as “a way to introduce to the world the traditions that China has,” calling it both “spectacular” and “magnificent.” She also praised the artists’ professionalism and said the performance carried an important message for younger generations.

“I hope that children learn about tenacity, responsibility, and transcendence,” she said. “That is very important. That is what I learned.”

Among the pieces presented, Ms. Sánchez said the piece about reincarnation touched her most deeply and prompted personal reflection.

“I did not believe much in reincarnation before,” she said, “but it became clear to me that we have a spirit, and that spirit gives us teaching and the motivation to give the best of ourselves in this life.”

“And if we have another life, we will continue giving and helping others,” she continued. “Shen Yun seeks to recover 5,000 years of Chinese culture, values, and traditions, and those values also reflect compassion and tolerance.”

She added that the sense of brotherhood portrayed in the performance, along with the willingness to help others, “is what truly leaves a mark.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired heritage and share with audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”

Ms. Sánchez was also deeply impressed by the finale depicting the Creator descending to save humanity.

“It was very beautiful and spectacular,” she said. “The screen shows creation and how they [good people] are saved. The divines come to save us, and that leaves a mark on us.”

Ms.  Sánchez believes that performances like Shen Yun are especially important for today’s society and younger generations.

“It is very important and transcendental,” she said. “This show cannot be seen in China.”

She shared that she had visited China three years earlier and had observed aspects of life under communist rule firsthand.

“Communism is not an option,” she said. “We must demonstrate that through our attitudes—not by imposing it, but by allowing people to decide what kind of government they want.”

Speaking about Shen Yun’s inability to perform in China, Ms. Sánchez said society must preserve traditional morality and discipline, and not confuse freedom with permissiveness.

She added that parents have a responsibility to guide their children away from becoming consumed by social media, and instead teach them universal values as well as the histories and traditions of different civilizations.

In closing, Ms. Sánchez expressed heartfelt appreciation for Shen Yun’s artistic director and performers.

“I would recommend that people come to see Shen Yun,” she said. “They present Chinese culture in a very professional way.”

She said the spiritual dimension of the performance was especially meaningful to her.

“The message of spirituality they give is extraordinary to me,” she said. “It moved me deeply as a human being and inspired me to share that with other people.”
