PARIS, France—Shen Yun’s final performances in Paris and, more broadly, across Europe, are playing to sold-out crowds at the Palais des Congrès, bringing to a close a season that has taken the company to 60 European cities.

Patrick Roullé has been actively involved in politics in Seine-et-Marne for many years, particularly in Lagny-sur-Marne, where he has run for office. On May 9, this regional director had the opportunity to immerse himself in 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture with Shen Yun.

“Absolutely magnificent!” he exclaimed. “You can really feel the connection between China and nature—the sun, the sky, the legends.”

Shen Yun means “the beauty of divine beings dancing”; the company has made it its mission to revive authentic traditional Chinese culture, which is deeply imbued with spirituality. China was once known as the “Land of the Divine,” and the ancient Chinese believed in a culture inherited from the gods. Everyone, from the humblest peasant to the most prestigious emperor, praised and honored the gods and respected the harmony between Heaven, humanity, and Earth.
“This performance captures the very essence of Chinese literature, as well as a deep respect for humanity and nature,” Mr. Roullé said.
“Through its various scenes, we are taken on a journey through a history spanning thousands of years. Including the intermission, the show lasts over two hours, but the time flies by.”

‘Virtue Rather Than Appearances’

While he appreciated the “sumptuous sets” created by the animated digital backdrop, Mr. Roullé was particularly struck by the “art of living” portrayed in the show. “What stands out is the emphasis on virtue rather than appearances, the idea that helping others brings a sense of fulfillment. We see this in several scenes.”
Having visited China himself, he believes that Shen Yun demonstrates a “deep understanding of China.”

“We see Chinese philosophy, Confucius, and the emphasis on kindness, helping others, and respecting nature. There was also humor in some of the scenes,” Mr. Roullé said.
