LYON, France—“Magnificent,” “marvelous,” “incredible,” ‘“magical,” and “enchanting” were just some of the adjectives used by spectators to describe Shen Yun Performing Arts, when the famous Chinese classical dance company performed at Amphithéâtre 3000 on April 26. The Epoch Times spoke to several audience members about their experience and why they enjoyed the performance so much.

“It makes you want to come back,” said David Moreno, a company manager, who was among the spectators, surrounded by his family. “And frankly, we didn’t see the two hours go by. It was very, very fast, very intense, very rhythmic ... a really great show.”

“Magnificent! I really enjoyed it, the whole cast, and the whole story behind the show,” he said. “It was marvelous, very athletic, very magical even. And we enjoyed it. We came as a group, as a family, and it was great. Would do it again.”

Mr. Moreno found the performers incredible. “It’s athletic choreography. It’s very impressive.”
New York-based Shen Yun dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, an art form whose history goes back thousands of years. In addition to mastery of dance fundamentals and technical skills and postures unique to the art form, it also requires tumbling techniques like the difficult leaps, spins, and flips that have since inspired modern sports like acrobatics and gymnastics.

The “inner bearing” is another important aspect of this complete dance system. It can be described as a very special inner spirit.

“You can feel the softness. You can feel a lot of emotion in all the gestures,” Mr. Moreno said. “It’s truly magical. That could also be the word to [describe] the Shen Yun performance.

“There’s something spiritual about the show. And yes, the staging also leads to these reflections. It’s very, very interesting and original,” he said.

“It can bring a little serenity and then maybe a little reconnection with life, quite simply.”

Laurent Koenig, a company director, saw the sold-out performance in the company of his granddaughter, for whom it was a Christmas present, and his partner.

“It’s wonderful!” Mr. Koenig said. “The colors are really pretty. Then the special effects, where people disappear and then take off into the sky, are really nice, and the dancers are extraordinary.”

The traditional Chinese culture presented by Shen Yun was deeply spiritual. For 5,000 years, the Chinese cherished values such as virtue, goodness, and integrity. They had a strong relationship with the divine. Since coming to power in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party has worked hard to erase traditional Chinese culture and values, one of the reasons why the New York-based Shen Yun cannot perform in China.

In the show, Mr. Koenig noticed “a lot of reference points or representations of divinity. And we can see that it’s very much linked to this side of divinity.”

This led Mr. Koenig to make these reflections about our relationship with divinity. “It’s true that we sometimes need to rediscover a little serenity through other things that we may have less control over, and that divinities are something we don’t control at all.”

“It can help some people find themselves, and rediscover a bit of calm and spirituality, of well-being,” he said. “And it’s true that the images we see reflect a great deal of well-being in fact.”

As for Shen Yun’s mission to present traditional Chinese culture, Mr. Koenig noted that “it’s something important because I think every country, anywhere in the world, has traditions, has a history, a great history.”

“It’s important to be able to say exactly where you come from, to know where you come from,” Mr. Koenig said.

Dominique Brizard emerged from the Shen Yun performance on April 26 with a great sense of inner calm. His wife, for her part, was deeply moved

“This is the first time I’ve heard of this show, and it’s perfect,” said Mr. Brizard, a physiotherapist. “It makes you want to come back.

“Everything is beautiful: the stories told, the choreography, the precision of the dancers, the beauty of the music, the color of the costumes.”

“You’re immersed in the show. Really!” Mr. Brizard added.

“There’s a kind of inner peacefulness during the show, you forget everything. You get caught up in the story, the stories, and the choreography,” he said. “When you come out of the show, you feel really relaxed. That’s how I feel. Peaceful, peaceful.”

Mr. Brizard was accompanied by his wife, who found Shen Yun “magnificent, magical,” but also “very moving, very colorful” as well as “energizing”.

“I cried twice,” she added. “I’m leaving with stars in my eyes. The soprano made me cry and brought back a lot of emotions. The pianist, too. It was all this sweetness, this lightness.”

“I was transported by all the scenes. It’s the general atmosphere, I think, and then the music too, the orchestra. It’s a whole,” she said.

For Mr. Brizard, the experience of Shen Yun is “very emotional. There’s lots and lots of emotion.

“So for me, it didn’t make me cry ... but on the other hand, you get a great feeling of calm, of inner calm, but I found that even if the [dances] are tonic, when you leave there, you’re calm inside. It gave me serenity,” he said.

“We should see it more often, because once a year, if we come back next year, I don’t know if this serenity will stay anchored long enough,” he added with a laugh. “We’re all too stressed, but it’s true that it does a lot of good.”
